Wow, Carrie this is amazing! The colors, the detail, the shading...and dang girl, hands are hard and you did a beautiful job. Well done! I can't wait to see what you do next.
I really like it. I could never paint something like that. Just out of curiosity, why did you choose blue for her dress and comb? What I like best about it is how you made the apple the center of attention bringing everything around it into one story. I think the only thing I'd change is to put a pattern on the dress and comb to create more character in the items.
The reason why it is the way it is, is because I was trying out the technique "alla prima", which is to apply paint as quickly as possible as you see it. The comb and cloth I used were both blue (I purchased them in blue because I wanted the apple to be the focal point). Since that is what I could see, that is what I'm supposed to paint. The fabric did have an incredibly detailed pattern, but also with this technique, I am not supposed to worry about extraneous detail. So, I deliberately did not paint the pattern accurately to keep in the spirit of "alla prima".
However, you are right in that actually painting the detailed pattern would definitely add to the painting and it would be interesting to try the corset in another painting with a glaze technique and very meticulous application.
Here are some links that help explain "alla prima" and how it is that red draws your eye more than blue. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wet-on-wet http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_theory#Warm_vs._cool_colors
Oooooooooh!!!! That is so cool! I see now. For alla prima you did a fantastic job. I was thinking earlier that blue was the best choice because it does compliment the red and help it be the focus. I am excited to see your next piece :D
If blogs had a "Like" button like Facebook does, I'd "Like" your comment, Kate! Thanks! I'm going to go for the Crossroads Art Center Christmas Gallery show this year. The deadline is not for about 2 weeks. So, I'm going to try to do more still life paintings for that show. I'll post them when they're done!
